KNIFE, parry -- FLEX THROW
Description
This technique is very similar to PISTOL, parry -- FLEX THROW. The difference is in the fact that uke attacks with a knife thrust, which tends to make this technique more dynamic, since more movement is necessary.
It begins when uke attempts a straight thrust at tori's midsection. Tori parries by the "barn door" method - pivot 90 with right foot as the fulcrum - so as to move the minimal amount and still close the space while avoiding being cut. At the same time, tori must parry uke's arm with his own left hand, with left palm forward to guard against uke redirecting his thrust. Tori should slide the left hand over the top of uke's hand to get a grip on the thumb side, while grabbing the bottom (pinky side) of uke's hand with his own right hand. Uke's thrust and tori's parry and grab should now have tori facing uke's right shoulder.
Now tori strikes back. The flex throw (wrist twist) technique is a simple and effective takedown. It is fastest and most effective when the wrist is first flexed inward to it's maximum extent as the uke's hand reaches the top of the arc during the throw. This is accomplished by tori stepping to the rear with the left foot and pivoting on his right foot in a military-step fashion, while twisting uke's right hand and flexing uke's right forearm upward toward uke's left shoulder. This will flex uke's knife hand to a 90-degree angle or less to his forearm. This makes uke's wrist and inside forearm extremely rigid and sensitive. Tori continues the military step, attempting as much as possible to rotate only uke's wrist without moving his own elbows away from his body. This move is most simple and effective when the motion is kept as small as possible. At some point, uke should fall to the ground to avoid having his wrist broken. Tori should continue the twist until uke's elbow is pressed against the ground. Now tori can place his right knee on uke's elbow and continue the flex until the knife is released. Tori may then retrieve the knife and exit the scene.
Steps
- uke attempts straight knife thrust at tori's abdomen.
- tori minimizes unnecessary movement while making a 90-degree turn to avoid knife trajectory and left-handed parry, with palm out.
- tori continues parry motion to grab uke's hand around the thumb, while grabbing the other side of uke's hand with his right hand.
- tori pivots around right foot in military step fashion to twist and flex uke's wrist inward, continuing all the way around to force uke to the ground.
- tori forces uke's elbow to the ground and kneels on it with his right knee.
- tori continues the wrist flex and twist until uke releases the knife.
