BENT LAPEL -- FLEX BOW

Description

This technique is a basic takedown defense against a lapel grab. Initially, uke grabs tori by the left lapel with his right hand ("Hey! Gimme my damn lunch money!"). Tori uses both of his hands to pin the back of uke's hand to his chest, and then flexes uke's wrist by "bowing" at the waist. Most commonly, uke is pushing as he is grabbing - in this case, as in the stationary case, tori should step back with his left foot to continue uke's movement while flexing uke's wrist. If uke is pulling tori, then tori should step forward with his left foot and accentuate the flex-bow.

Steps

  1. uke grabs tori's left lapel
  2. tori immobilizes uke's hand by grabbing onto both sides of it and pinning it to tori's chest; critical that tori grab uke's hand below the wrist and above the fingers.
  3. tori steps back with the left and bows at the waist to force uke to the mat with wrist flex if uke is stationary or pushing. If uke is pulling, tori steps forward with the left to stay with uke and bows more forcefully.
