MAT: STRADDLE -- STOMACH BUMP
Description
This is a way of escaping an opponent who is straddling you and attempting a choke. Initially, uke straddles tori, who is flat on his back. With uke's weight forward behind his choking arms, tori flexes both knees and draws both feet in as close to his buttocks as possible, then threads his right arm behind uke's left, and in front of uke's right, and makes a palm-to palm grip with his own left hand. Tori should hold his left arm as close to uke's right arm as possible, and should slide the grip upward as close to uke's right elbow as possible. Tori should collapse uke's choke by pulling down on uke's right arm using his own right wrist, held just below uke's elbow. This pull is all in the left hand; the right arm is simply used as a bar with which to flex uke's right arm.
As uke collapses downward and forward, tori should pin uke's forearm tightly to his chest, while simultaneously bridging up and to his left, by planting shoulders and feet, and flexing his pelvis off the ground, carring uke with it. Collapsing uke's choke is critical; it maintains tori's airway, but more importantly, pulls uke close to tori's body so that when tori bridges, uke moves with him - otherwise, uke's arms would simply act as shock absorbers, and tori's bridge would accomplish very little. Also, collapsing the choke forces uke's weight forward slightly, making uke easier to throw off with the arching action.
Steps
- uke straddles tori and places hands in choking position.
- tori flexes knees and brings both feet in as close to his buttocks as possible.
- tori threads right arm behind uke's left arm, and in front of uke's right arm.
- Tori grabs his right arm with his left, and uses his left arm as a bar to collapse uke's right arm into tori's chest, pinning uke's body to tori, and throwing uke's weight slightly forward.
- Tori arches up and to the left to throw uke off.
