CLUB, juji uke -- ARMBREAK SAKOTSU

Description

This technique begins when uke attacks tori with an overhand right-handed strike with a blunt instrument (club). Tori blocks strongly by stepping in with the left foot and blocking upward with the left hand (this is a juji uke block), with the right hand overtop so as to trap the wrist. Tori's forward position under the hand, rather than under the club, protects him from injury, as does an early block of the strike - if tori allows the strike to gain too much momentum, he may be struck on the back, or the back of the head, with the club. Tori then continues the motion of the striking arm down, pulling tori off balance with his right hand, so as to lay uke's right arm out horizontal in front of tori. Tori strikes with a tetsui (hammer-fist) downward with the left hand to break the elbow, simultaneously pulling upward on the right wrist to provide leverage for the break. Tori then allows the arm to fall (still blocking it out with his left hand) and strikes with sakotsu to uke's exposed (5th cervical) vertebra.

Steps

  1. uke attempts overhand strike with club in right hand.
  2. tori blocks strike at the top of the arc with left juji uke, right arm crossing left to form an 'X', so as to trap uke's descending arm at the wrist.
  3. tori, with right hand, grabs uke's right arm at the wrist and brings it directly to tori's right hip, while simultaneously pivoting on left foot so as to face in the same direction as uke. Uke's striking momentum should be conserved in this step as much as possible.
  4. tori the strikes vertically downward on uke's right elbow with tetsui (hammer-fist), while simultaneously lifting uke's right wrist to provide better leverage for the break.
  5. tori releases uke's right wrist but continues to block the right arm out with the left, and performs sakotsu to uke's exposed (5th cervical) vertebra.
